A Menu of Belgian BeersAs the Belgians are fond of saying, "Our food is cooked with French finesse but served in portions of German generosity." And in another homily, "If one has to eat three meals a day, then they may as well be delicious." Together, these adages illustrate the blend of French style, Germanic portions and uniquely Belgian practicality found in the pages of Everyone Eats Well in Belgium, a new cookbook by Belgian native Ruth Van Waerebeek, a visiting chef at the Peter Kump School of Cooking in New York City. This book provides a generous portion of recipes, presented with exquisite attention to detail and capturing the way generations of Belgians have cooked, prepared and enjoyed their meals. Key to the cuisine of Belgium is its beers, best discovered in the native setting of the estaminet, or cafe. Though not as well recognized as the French version, the Belgian cafe thrives on a steady trade of beer drinkers as well as those who simply want coffee or tea.

The bier hund on Germany's bestPerhaps the luckiest beer lovers in the world, the elder residents of Erling-Andechs, trudge up the hill to Kloster Andechs every day at noon. As they have done for centuries, they tote their bags of lunch with bread and wurst to enjoy with fresh draft Andechs Doppelbock Dunkel, a beer that many, myself included, believe to be the best beer in the world. This rich earthy complex malty brew is not to be missed. I have found it on draft as far north as Darmstadt, and in bottles as close to Frankfurt as Pfungstadt. It is equally good either in bottles or on draft. I once tasted a bottle that was nine years old, and found it to be improved with age.

What Type of Drinker are You?Ever think about what type of drinker you are, how you match up to others? Sounds rather high school-like, doesn't it? It's not. It's very important to know who you are, what you are doing and how you are perceived when you go out drinking. Why? Because life is rather high school-like, always will be, and if you don't understand, you are bound to get picked on. Oh, it might not be to your face, but you will be talked about. Everyone is. And what type of drinker you are is merely one of the many wonderful topics.

Hangovers: They Happen!Hangovers are easy to avoid. Don't drink. Or at least don't drink too much. Because physicians do not absolutely know what causes a "hangover" there are manysuggestions for a) avoiding them and b) for recovering quickly when a) fails.

Beer Vs Other SnacksThere's a game on TV, so you grab a beer and a bag of chips and you settle in. The chips leave you a little thirsty, so you grab another beer. After a while, you notice that the chips are almost gone and it's not even halftime. You jump in the car at the break, go and pick up a Burger King Whopper and a bag of fries and return for the second half. Of course, you have to drink another beer.

Amstel Light: Is it all that it is Cracked up to Be?As of two months ago, I hated Amstel Light. It is what I would call an acquired taste. At first I thought it was very Heinekenesque, which is very bad in my book, Heineken is awful. Heineken however is the parent company of Amstel. After an on again off again battle with the Amstel Light, I have grown very much to appreciate the taste. All of my friends have been drinking this for an eternity, and it is only until now that I have caught on to the fever. The taste is a little on the bitter side. It is well, like a Heineken. But on the same hand, because it is a lite beer, does not quite have the bite of a full flavored, full calorie brew. But this is what makes Amstel a really good beer. Upon further taste tasting it has actually become one of my favorite lite beers. I had three of them for dinner tonight at a fine Italian restaurant, the taste flowed smoothly down my throat as it melded with the great taste of the food. One after the other the taste became intoxicating, where I just needed another, simply in order to continue breathing. At just under 100 calories, how could you beat this beer? It is like I said, not a full flavored brew like a Killian's but a hearty light beer. Until next time, Happy hops and oats!

Don't Laugh: It's the Coors' Lite Taste Test
Well guy and girls, I have to say that I am drinking a Coors' Lite right now. Before the mocking starts, let me begin. The taste may be a bit on the weaker side. But if you are in for a long night, and don't want to look like a cow in five years, this is one of the greatest recommendations from me.The initial weak girlie taste is quickly overcome by the smooth tasting brew. One after the other the smooth taste becomes acquired, I long for the taste of a Coors Lite after a hard day at work. Pop the cap off the bottle, the smoke rises, poor it into the wonderful tall glass and voila, pure enjoyment. Listen all you men, I can go with the best of you, but this is a fine beer when you want to knock ten or more back, it may not be the most full-bodied but for what it is, you can't beat it. It's Lite people.....Lite. So therefore it will not be full bodied. Drink ten of these and you are only up to half your daily calorie allowance. Happy drinking everyone, and until next time, tip the bottle.

Drinking Helps Prevent Strokes Moderate drinkers, meaning those who had between one and two drinks a day, had a roughly 30% lower risk of stroke than teetotalers, reports the February 5 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. And the risk of stroke for people who had about one drink or less of alcohol a day, but did not abstain entirely, was about 20% lower than the risk for abstainers.
