Sars Mutating Quickly

HONG KONG, China (CNN) -- Mutations of the SARS virus and relapses among patients are puzzling scientists trying to understand the disease, amid a five-fold increase in the number of deaths in the past month.

Doctors at the Chinese University of Hong Kong said there were two forms of SARS present in the hard-hit Chinese territory, which could complicate efforts to develop a diagnosis and vaccine.

Lawmakers praise troops-Including Daschle
WASHINGTON - Less than two months after the first U.S. warplanes dropped bombs over Baghdad, South Dakota lawmakers said they were pleased that most major combat in Iraq was coming to an end but warned that the hard work of reconstruction lies ahead.

President Bush joined sailors Thursday aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln to discuss the next phase in Iraq. Thousands of U.S. soldiers are still in the country and the Persian Gulf region trying to restore order after ending Saddam Hussein's 24-year rule.

SAN DIEGO — President Bush helped pilot the jet that swooped down for a dramatic landing on the USS Abraham Lincoln yesterday, marking the first time he has taken the controls of an aircraft in more than 30 years.

Sources: Suspect may know bin Laden's location
The suspect, Ali Abed al Aziz, is a nephew of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the September 11 terrorist attacks, and a cousin of Ramzi Youssef, who was convicted in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, the sources said.

Aziz was among six suspected al Qaeda members captured Tuesday by Pakistani authorities in Karachi. In his mid-20s, Aziz is also known as Amer al Baluchi.



 
Report: U.S. Special Forces may have captured Bin Laden
U.S. Special Operations Forces have launched what was described as a major attack on Al Qaida strongholds in eastern Afghanistan over the last few days and Pakistani sources said several Al Qaida leaders have been captured.

The London-based Al Hayat daily reported on Thursday that the U.S. force might have also captured Bin Laden. The newspaper quoted Pakistani military sources as saying that Bin Laden could have been one of the Al Qaida leaders seized by the United States.

There are now more than 5,600 cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome worldwide, with 3,647 of those in China.

Justice Dept. asks Supreme Court to rule on pledge


A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, based in San Francisco, California, ruled 2-1 last June that public schools could not conduct class recitations of the pledge because the words "under God" would violate the constitutional clause preventing government establishment of religion.




 

Terrorism: Lowest in 33 Years


The State Department, in its annual report on global terrorism, says the number of terror attacks declined sharply last year due to increased international cooperation and resolve. Seven countries - Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Syria, and Sudan - were again listed as state sponsors of terrorism, though Iraq may soon come off the list.

Palestinians' New Premier Denounces Terrorism
Mahmoud Abbas was approved Tuesday as the Palestinians' first prime minister and in a speech to parliament forcefully denounced terrorism and declared that peace was the "strategic, irrevocable choice" of the Palestinian people. But he warned Israel that it must abandon Jewish settlements and end its occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip to achieve a lasting peace.

BOSTON - Officials at Abiomed Inc. said Tuesday they were considering implanting their artificial heart into patients who have suffered major heart attacks and whose relatives would have to give consent.

The proof that Saddam worked with bin Laden
Iraqi intelligence documents discovered in Baghdad by The Telegraph have provided the first evidence of a direct link between Osama bin Laden's al-Qa'eda terrorist network and Saddam Hussein's regime.

Papers found yesterday in the bombed headquarters of the Mukhabarat, Iraq's intelligence service, reveal that an al-Qa'eda envoy was invited clandestinely to Baghdad in March 1998.....
